UPDATE, 11 September: the game has been played. San Francisco beat the Rams 27-7 in front of 100,021 at the MCG, and the whale room that had never bet the NFL put $791,508 on it, including a $201,484 in-play ticket on the Rams that died. Read the Week 1 ledger.

At 10:35 on Friday morning, Melbourne time, the San Francisco 49ers will kick off against the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the National Football League will have played a regular-season game in Australia for the first time in its history. It is on Netflix. It is at the ground that hosts the AFL Grand Final. It is, for anyone in this country who has ever had to set a 4am alarm to watch a Sunday slate, a genuinely strange thing to be able to catch over breakfast.

The whale room has not put a dollar on it.

Soccer has 23,689 captured bets on tail.bet. Tennis has 13,819. Counter-Strike has 3,776. American football, the sport that carries the largest betting handle in the world, has 29, worth $612,034 in total, with nine winners, fourteen losers, four cash-outs and two still live. The return sits at $446,962, an ROI of -26.97%, fourth-worst of the twenty-three sports on the board with twenty or more tickets, and worse than every sport that carries real volume.

There is a straightforward reason. The whales we track are on a global crypto book, and the NFL season is four months long with sixteen games a week and a market so efficient that the edge a six-figure punter is hunting mostly is not there. They spend the northern summer on tennis and soccer, and they turn up for gridiron in January.

Which makes the two tickets currently sitting open worth looking at closely.

$44,910, one account, one team

On 3 September an account trading as ufos placed $14,564 on the Kansas City Chiefs to reach the 2026/27 playoffs at 1.50. On 6 September, the same account came back and put $30,346 on the Chiefs to beat Denver at 1.66 in the Monday night game that closes Week 1.

That is $44,910 on Kansas City from a single account inside three days, and it is the entire NFL position on our board going into the season. Both are pending. Neither can settle before 14 September.

The only other NFL-tagged ticket we hold is a $19,266 Dallas Cowboys -2.5 handicap from 24 August that was cashed out at exactly the stake, a punter changing his mind for free. The preseason produced nine tickets and $119,766, graded 2-4 with three cash-outs, including $24,505 on Dallas at 1.01 that returned $24,750. Risking twenty-four thousand dollars to make two hundred and forty-five is either a bankroll requirement or a joke, and on a book like this one it is usually the former.

Meanwhile, the college money is enormous

The gridiron whales are not absent. They are watching a different sport.

The largest American football ticket in the entire archive was placed on Friday: $67,432 on Michigan State at 1.22 against Toledo, which won and returned $82,267. Saturday brought $50,000 on James Madison at 1.30, also a winner. On Thursday, an account called ayoflasher took $38,000 on Colorado plus 6.5 at 1.90 and collected $72,200, while a separate ticket for $29,716 on Georgia Tech to win outright in the same match lost.

Eight of the ten biggest gridiron bets on the site are college football. The other two are the Chiefs ticket above and a preseason one. The whales will take a 1.22 line on a Big Ten side beating a MAC side. They will not take a 1.66 line on the Chiefs beating the Broncos, at least not in this volume. It is the single clearest signal in the data: the money believes it can read a college mismatch and does not believe it can read the NFL.

What Week 1 actually looks like

The season opens Wednesday 9 September, 8:20pm Eastern, with New England at Seattle. That is a Super Bowl LX rematch: the Seahawks beat the Patriots 29-13 on 8 February to win the title, and the league has put the two of them back on the field to start the year.

Then Melbourne. The 49ers and Rams at the MCG, 8:35pm Eastern Thursday, which is 10:35am AEST on Friday 11 September. It is the first of a record nine international games this season, a list that also takes in the Maracana in Rio, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium twice, Wembley, the Bernabeu, Munich, Mexico City and the Stade de France, the last of those the first NFL game ever played in France.

Sunday 13 September carries thirteen games, with Dallas at the New York Giants in the night slot. Monday 14 September closes the week with Denver at Kansas City, which is where ufos has his money.

A handful of teams start short-handed. Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr is serving an eight-game suspension under the personal conduct policy. Titans cornerback Nazeeh Johnson has six games under the performance-enhancing substances policy. Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt misses the opener. Giants receiver Calvin Austin III and Texans receiver Jayden Higgins are both gone for the season with torn ACLs.

Four playing rules changed at the April owners’ meetings, and one of them matters for anybody betting live: an onside kick can now be declared at any point in a game, not only in the fourth quarter by a trailing team. There is also a new three-strikes rule under which a third violation in a season of any of five specified safety fouls, among them the hip-drop tackle and the horse-collar, triggers an automatic one-game suspension.

The futures board

Super Bowl LXI prices as of 5 September, from two separate books, put the Los Angeles Rams clear favourite at +500. Buffalo and Baltimore follow around +1000 to +1100, the defending champion Seahawks around +1100 to +1200, and Kansas City at +1600.

The Rams’ position is the offseason story in one line. They traded for Myles Garrett, gave up a 2027 first-round pick and Jared Verse to do it, extended Trent McDuffie after prising him out of Kansas City, and then got Aaron Donald to come out of retirement on a one-year deal. Their win total is set at 11.5, tied with Baltimore for the highest in the league.

For MVP, Josh Allen leads at around +650, with Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert bunched behind him.

Elsewhere: A.J. Brown went to New England for a 2027 first, Tua Tagovailoa is in Atlanta on a veteran-minimum deal, Kyler Murray is competing for the job in Minnesota, and the Raiders cycled through three quarterbacks in one offseason before taking Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza first overall.

None of which has produced a captured bet yet. If the MCG game changes that, it will show on the NFL hub and the American football board within minutes of the ticket being placed. Our capture floor is five figures, so a Melbourne crowd of eighty-odd thousand can produce plenty of betting without any of it reaching this page. It takes one whale.

The rest of the September book: the AFL finals, where the two biggest Australian rules tickets we have ever seen both died on Friday night, and the second week at Flushing Meadows, where $550,000 went on Taylor Fritz. Every graded ticket is on the all-time board and the live feed. Before you tail any of it, check the bonus board. 18+ · gamble responsibly.
