How Roland Garros works
The French Open is the only Grand Slam played on natural red clay. Slower bounces, longer rallies, and a heavier ball reward topspin and stamina — the surface that gave Rafael Nadal 14 titles and the modern era's highest physical demands. The men play best-of-five sets; the women play best-of-three. Both draws begin with 128 players and condense over seven rounds: First Round, Second Round, Third Round, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Finals on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
A short history of the title
First contested in 1891 (Open Era from 1968), Roland-Garros is named for the French aviator. Record men's titlist: Rafael Nadal with 14. Record women's titlist: Chris Evert with 7. Recent men's champions include Carlos Alcaraz (2024, 2025), Novak Djokovic (2023), and Rafael Nadal (2022, 2020, 2019, 2017–2014, 2012–2010). Recent women's champions include Coco Gauff (2025) and Iga Świątek (2024, 2023, 2022, 2020).
